Cellphone Camera: Is it the New Brownie?

">

Shawn Rocco shares his style of documenting with the Kodak Brownie of the digital age.
Any thoughts?

  1. There are some gorgeous images in that collection and deep down, I believe that it's the image that matters, not the tool which made the image.

I've long believed that cell phone cameras have "cheapened" photography, but that is also a bourgeois mindset. The cell phone camera is doing for digital what the Argus C3 did for budding photographers: making it accessible to everyone.

While this cell phone citizen photojournalism makes me a bit angry and sad for the craft, I also think it puts the world in an exciting age in which we can see, almost real-time, events which are happening everywhere, from the point of view of the people taking part in those events.

This point of view used to be owned by phojos and so the world was seen through the eyes of Gary Winogrand or Phillip Jones Griffiths to name a few of my favorites.

Everyone always took photos since roll-film became both affordable and accessible to the mass market. Instead of loading up the carousel to look at chromes, now we turn on our computers or show them on our phones.

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.
